Hi,
I have constant problem with back up of Hyper-V virtual machines using DPM
2007 and just wonder if you could help me.

Configuration:
Host – DELL PE 2950 with Windows Server 2008 SP2.
Guests – 5 Virtual machines with Windows Server 2008 SP 2 sitting on local
SAS drivers. Two problematic servers are on separated volume than rest. No
space issue.

My problem is that backup usually works for 1-2 months and then stops on two
from five machines with following error:
DPM encountered a retryable VSS error. (ID 30112 Details: Unknown error
(0x800423f3) (0x800423F3))
When I execute vssadmin list writers command there is an error:
Writer name: 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer'
Writer Id: {66841cd4-6ded-4f4b-8f17-fd23f8ddc3de}
Writer Instance Id: {e7428c70-7e77-4d5f-a420-270f492427ff}
State: [11] Failed
Last error: Retryable error
But 3 from 5 machines are still backup without any problems.

In event log on host I can see:

Event ID 10103
Failed to revert to VSS snapshot on the virtual hard disk
'\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy53501\VM\SQLDEV\SQLDEV1.vhd'
of the virtual machine 'SQLDEV'. (Virtual machine ID
CC66CA08-C0F9-4F02-8E68-EBB81CF5B0A4)

Event ID 10
The shadow copy of volume took too long to install.

Event ID 12
The device 'Storage miniport driver'
(VMBUS\{9f560687-7df8-4cb7-8099-b798aca68c4c}\1&3189fc23&0&{9f560687-7df8-4cb7-8099-b798aca68c4c})
disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal.

On Guest:
No errors in vssadmin
No errors in Event log.

I restarted guest virtual machines but it didn’t help. Sometimes shutting
downing of all VMs and rebooting host fix it for a while but unfortunately it
is not a solution for me. I thought to take guest backup but unfortunately
virtual machines are in separate domain than DPM so as far as I know it is
not possible.

Could you help me to troubleshoot this issue please?
