Hi. I'm using DPM v2b1 to protect 8 file servers, and the protection is
going smoothly other that backup to tape. Basically after running for
several hours, the backup jobs for each volume show the following error:
"The DPM service was unable to communicate with the protection agent on
server [our server name]. (ID 52 Details: The specified network name is no
longer available (0x80070040))"

With the exception of one volume (different every time), which instead shows
the details as "The connection has been broken due to keep-alive activity
detecting a failure while the oparation was in progress (0x80072744)".

The jobs continue to run, showing 0MB copied, until I manually cancel them.

I'm using an IBM VXA-2 tape drive. DPM seems to have no problem performing
manual operations to the tape (marking as free, erasing, etc).

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Dave,

Are you using direct backup to tape from the production server (D-T) or
backup from the replica (D-D-T)?

If the issues are consistently reproable can you download the MPSRPT tool
from the connect website and collect traces for the scenario when it fails?
Once you have that please send me mail on Kapil dot Malhotra AT microsoft
dot com so that I can create an FTP share for you to upload the traces to.
