Discussion:
Error 322 - Servers not found in DPM agent deployment wizard

I'm so frustrated with DPM I could scream. Its just one cryptic error
message after another.

When attempting to deploy the DPM agent, I don't see a list of servers in
the install agent -> select servers window. If I try to enter the name of a
server manually I get the following error:

The following servers MAIL1 were either not found in Active Directory or
they do not have a Windows Server operating system installed.

1) Confirm the spelling of the server name.
2) Make sure that the server has a Windows 2000 Server or later operating
system installed.
3) Make sure you have entered the NETBIOS name for the server.
4) If the server has just been added to the domain you may need to wait for
Active Directory to update.

ID: 322

I have spelled the server name properly.
MAIL1 is running Windows 2003 Enterprise.
I entered the netbios name.
The server has been part of AD for a few years.

What causes this error and how can we resolve?

Thanks in advance for help.

Just to follow up on this:

- I can see all of the domain member servers from my network places
- I can ping both of the Domain Controllers from the DPM server
- There is no firewall between the DPM servers and the domain member servers
- I have waited for an autodiscovery to occur.
- I am not seeing any error messages in the system log or application log
which indicate any errors related to DPM.
- I've uninstalled and reinstalled DPM on server so I don't think its a
bad/corrupt installation
- We have a disk storage pool defined - its 1.6TB of disk space on a Dell
PV220 DAS

Hi Brad,

The LDAP lookup we do looks for the operatingSystem attribute on every
computerObject ((objectCategory=Computer).
Can you check to see if the operatingSystem attribute is not set or has a
value other than Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2000?

Thanks,
Vijay

I have a case open with Microsoft PSS - we checked that the OS string on the
computer object is set properly on all servers. (Either windows 2000 server
or windows server 2003)

Brad,
You have mentioned about two DC here. So just wanted to check if DPM and
the protected servers are in the same domain. We need to have both in the
same domain in v1.

Thanks

Is it only the server MAIL1 that is failing, or are you unable to install the
agent on any server at all?

Thanks,

Just an update on this problem in case anyone is wondering:

I completely re-setup the DPM server. This did NOT solve the problem. Thus
this doesn't seem to be a software compatibility issue or an issue directly
related to the DPM server.

I also setup a temporary domain controller running windows 2000 and joined
the DPM server to the domain controller. This works.
So it sounds like the problem lies with either Active Directory or
networking related to the domain controller.

I'm still actively troubleshooting this problem with Microsoft PSS but any
ideas or suggestions would be appreciated :-)

With the assistance of Microsoft PSS it seems that we've been able to
resolve this problem. It turns out to have been an active directory
permissions issue. To resolve the problem we did the following:

1) Open adsiedit (You may need to install adsiedit first - part of the
Windows 2000 Support Tools)

2) Find the computers OU in the left hand pane, right click on it, and go to
properties.

3) Go to the security tab and add the "authenticated users" group to the ACL
and give it read permissions.

4) Repeat steps 2 and 3 on the domain controllers OU.

Go back to your DPM server and you should be able to deploy the agent by
manually entering the appropriate NetBIOS server name. (In our case we had
to wait for auto discovery to occur before the server list was populated.)

Good luck!
