Hi,
I'm seeing below error in my weekly/monthly tape backups for a while now.
I have a HP MSL6030 tape library with 2 tape drives.
I tried enabling the colocation of the tapes but still same error.
It doesn't matter how many empty available tapes I have in the library,
I still get the same below error. I have to remove the last used tape
and retry the job to finish it. How can I make DPM to pick up the next free
tape?

This is not expected. DPM should ask for a free tape and continue with
backup. Please open a support case with Microsoft to resolve the issue.

Does this happen only on a particular tape and tape drive? Or does it happen
with all tapes/drives?

This could be potentially due to a bad tape/drive.

It happens to different tapes and drives when weekly jobs run over the
weekend.

I have a similar setup with the MSL6030 and get the same error message all
the time. I also have setup colocation and it doesn't matter what tapes or
drives or how many free tapes are available, you get the error message. You
have to keep having the job retry until it finds a tape that isn't at the end
of the physical tape...which wastes a lot of backup time.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with this issue. I hope someone will give us
directions here...

Do you also have the issue only some of the used tapes not showing as
Offsite Ready?
I'm almost sure that's because of the failing tape backup jobs.

I was able to resolve this issue by downloading latest driver available for
Dell TL2000 library from IBM, since dell uses IBM libraries. Latest driver
version on dell is 6.1.8.X and Latest driver on IBM site is 6.1.9.7.

Procedure I followed:
1) uninstall any driver that you have installed for drive and library and
reboot
2) Download Driver from
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/storage/devdrvr/Windows/Win2003/Latest/
3) Exctract the Driver
4) run install_nonexclusive.exe -t -d and accept the non windows certified
driver warning. wait for driver to install completly.
5) run install_nonexclusive.exe -c -d and accept the non windows certified
driver warning. wait for driver to install completly.
6) Reboot and re-run the job again and it should work

Hope this helps.

This error is kind of a Misnomer. There are many drivers which detect an I/O Failure as an end of media and DPM reports the same.

If you go through the MSDPCURR.Errlog located at c:\program files\Microsoft DPM\DPM\TEMP and search for (0x8007045D)you will find a lot of matches.

(0x8007045D)- There are I\O errors from the hardware level that is timing out.

In order to resolve this you need to update the drivers and firmware related to the library or stand alone tape drive. This is a very good discussion about the same issue.
