Discussion:
"volume missing" after upgrade (Again a big disapointment)

After upgrading with the latest feature pack, it all looked fine.
Synchronisation errors where less, but not gone and tape backup was an
improvement. But now, after restarting the DPM server, most of the
protection group jobs show "volume missing. I stopped protecting a
single job without deleting from hardisk and tape. And it seemed to
work. At least it didn't give an error. But because it takes about 10
minutes to remove and add the job back again i decided to restart the
server again, hoping it would resolve itself (false hope). Instead even
more protection jobs gave the "volume missing" and even the job I just
recovered.

What's wrong? I can resolve this by removing and adding the jobs but
probably with the next restart, it all returns to "volume missing"

Affected area: C:\
Occurred since: 7/6/2008 7:50:48 PM
Description: Recovery data for Volume C:\ on server07.mydomain in
protection group File Servers resides on a volume that cannot be
detected. All subsequent protection activities relating to C:\ will fail
until this volume is brought back online or the replica is re-created.
(ID 3101)
Recommended action: Verify that the disk containing the replica volume
and the recovery point volume is shown in Disk Management. If you are
unable to locate the volumes in Disk Management, use the Protection task
area in DPM Administrator Console to stop protection of the data source
using the Delete replica option, and then add the data source to a
protection group again.

Hi Sdanou,

Can you please open the disk management UI and verify that it is showing the
dynamic disk assigned to DPM as online. and no issues with disks are
reported in Disk Management UI.

Thanks
Mukul

It will take sometime for the replica volumes and recovery point volumes to
come online after a system reboot. Can you wait for sometime and then check?

I didn't feel confident to restart the server. So I configured DPM to
restart synchronisations and consistency checks. During the folowing
days several protection volumes became inconsistent. I was anxious to
restart the server and start the procedures all over again. Because I
had a particular problem with the same type of server, which became
unresponsive under heavy load, I came across this link.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941276

It worked fine for the other server, and becaus I had similar problems
with my DPM server I also installed the update on my DPM server.
After this I felt confident enough to restart the server. There where no
more "volume missing" messages. Several restarts where without any
problem what so ever.

By the way my DPM server is a HP DL380-G5 with an MSA20.
