Unable to Configure Protection (ID 3170) (0x80070001)

We have DPM 2007 installed on a dedicated (non-DC) Dell 2650 running Server
2003 R2 SP2 (server1). The system has a Perc3/Di controller configured with
one Raid5 container for the OS and DPM, and a second volume container for the
DPM disk. Update KB940349-V3 is installed.

A DPM agent was pushed to another Dell 2650 running Server 2003 R2 SP2
(server2). This server has a Perc3/Di controller configured with one Raid5
container. Update KB940349-V3 is installed and the DPM agent was removed and
reinstalled after the update.

When creating a disk based Protection Group on server1 to backup a volume on
server2, an "Unable to configure protection" alert is being issued on server1:

Affected area: D:\

Description: DPM could not start a recovery, consistency check, or initial
replica creation job for Volume D:\ on server2.domain.com for the following
reason: (ID 3170).

An unexpected error occurred during job execution. (ID 104 Details:
Incorrect function (0x80070001)).

Recommended action: Retry the operation.

This alert is then followed by a second alert indicating that the "replica
is inconsistent" and to resolve the "Unable to configure alert". Running the
configure protection job again does not correct the problem.
